Valley Fever Awareness Week

What Can We Do About Valley Fever?

You can help.

You probably already know that we are in the midst of a bad Valley Fever season. According to the Kern County Public Health Department cases are sharply up. There is no cure for Valley Fever, and the best treatment is only partially effective. It is time to have a public discussion about this disease.

Join us.

Valley Fever Awareness Week will be the week of April 10. Lunch, a VF PANEL PRESENTATION AT HODELS, and a new video are available to you on April 13 from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. at Hodel’s restaurant. Please come and bring a friend.

What can be done?

Let your legislators know that you think California should continue to help fund the research for a vaccine to prevent the disease. Through the California Department of Public Health, the state has been a partner in the research effort to find a vaccine. Without their continued participation the research effort will be greatly diminished resulting in time lost, continued suffering, and high medical costs for both the public and private sector of our economy.

Make a contribution!

If you cannot join us, please enclose a contribution to help in the research. We are not a big enough market to entice the support of large pharmaceutical companies for this effort, so we have to do it on our own.  If we are to conquer this disease, we need the support of the people, someone like you. Please help. Hope to see you there!

i have a bunch of questions- why would bakersfield or kern county hold a state soccer tournament in april if this diesease is so devasting(my 9 yr old nephew has disemminated valley fever)? Is april a bad time to be outside with hundreds of kids kicking up fields? i dont understand why they arent wrnings to stay away or make people aware of the possibilty of contracting this diesease.

I have a 4 year old minature schnauzer with valley fever. I adopted here one year ago. At the time I did not know she had valley fever or actually what it was, I had just moved to Arizona the previous November, and this was January. She has been on medication for a year now and her titer count is still 32, I am hoping she gets better, and can get the titter count down. But we lover her and are doing everthing we can for her. It sure helps to hear about new things I can or should do for her.

    Thank you

My daughter Marilee Seamans passed away April 3 2012 from Valley Fever which had been misdiagnosed for over 3 months. We have lived up here in Bakersfield for 5 years but was not aware of this painful disease that is so prevalent in this area. Why isn’t more information out there and why aren’t the Drs. & hospital up here more informed. She was at her Primary care DR. Urgent care Drs, and never tested until they operated on her sinus cavity for so-called tumor and found Valley Fever there and in her Medulla of her brain that was picked up by an MRI & called tumors. Also 4 trips to emergency hospital. Treated with antibiotics sent home twice. She had all the symptoms but no one would listen and we had no idea. REST IN PEACE my darling daughter Born May 6 1955 Passed April 3 2012.
