My wife and I were watching TV last week and came upon the coverage of the Valley Fever Golf Tournament. The question was asked of the person being interviewed, ” What started the annual golf tournament”. The answer was that it was started because of the death due to valley fever of a local man, he believed his name was Bigger. I believe that the Rotary Club should be updated on the background of the tournament and how it was formed. Leon Bigger lived in Bakersfield for many years and enjoyed golf to the max. He was a member of Sundale Country Club and you could find him at the course with his “cronies” every weekend. When he passed away in 1996, a few of his cronies and other friends had an idea to have a golf tournament in his memory. The first tournament raised $10,000 for valley fever and continued to grow each year after that. The Rotary club took over the tournament when it got to big for a few individuals to run. I am proud to say that I was a part of that original group and what we were able to accomplish for valley fever. My only point is that I believe that whoever was interviewed for the tournament this year should have looked more into the history of the tournament and and not just that the gentlemen’s name was Bigger.

  • On January 29th my son Tyler Bridgewater passed away due to valley fever in his brain, I am looking for anyway to start some type of valley fever awareness walk, or something, anything!! if you have any suggestions please let me know, He was only 12 yrs old and a north fire football player, that was sooo full of life, and after a long hard battle an multiple invasive surgeries he passed away at centeral california childrens hospital on Jan 29, 2011. The only ever documented case of valley fever in the brain.
